Monarch Productions Celebrates its 35th anniversary with  Popular Competitions

Washington, DC (October 11, 2021) Monarch Productions celebrated its 35th anniversary in National Harbor.

Last night Monarch Productions, founded in 1986 by Shiba Byron, celebrated its 35th anniversary in a socially distanced ceremony along with its favorite directors, actors and producers. In between performances by popular musicians, the company announced the people’s favorites through Monarch’s Competition Awards along with the most popular Monarch Productions protagonist of the year. The event started with speeches from Shiba Byron, Wallace West and Crisbell Knack, the new chief creative officer. The executives thanked their directors and producers for all their hard work and contributions to the company and audience members for coming out to celebrate during the COVID-19 crisis.

The ceremony started by announcing the winners of the separate competitions. The winner of Best Director was George Farrier for his 2001 film, “The More We See.” The winner for best actor was Tim Haddleworth for his portrayal of Jason Vee also in “The More we See”. The Best Movie Award 17+ also went to the titular romance-thriller, “The More we See.”

Following these awards was a performance by Lil Nas X. The next award to be given was to ‘Lost and Found’ for Best Movie 17-. In her acceptance speech, Director Xian Li said, “It’s an honor to be recognized for the hard work me and my team put into this film but it is an even greater privilege to recognize that the stories of Asian-Americans are wanted and appreciated.” The winner for Best Show 17+ was “Criminal Hearts: Minnesota” while the winner for Best Show 17- was “Electric Emblem.”

The ceremony came to a close with its final and most famous competition, the Monarch Productions Protagonist Voting Gauntlet. Every other competition winner received a commemorative plaque in gold along with a check for $400,000. However, the winner of the Monarch Productions Protagonist Voting Gauntlet earns their director and actor a golden butterfly statue as well as one guaranteed new production for their protagonist. The 2021 Monarch Productions winner was Angrboda from the latest children’s television show named after her. Hayley Ngose, voice actor for Angrboda, cried during her acceptance speech stating: “This is a new era for black characters. This is a new era for queer characters. This is a new era where everyone, everywhere will be accepted for who they are and who they love.” The runner up was James Claw from the 1998 classic, “Last Gunman.” Traditionally Shiba Byron gives the trophy to the winner however the actor Quinn Thompson wanted to do so himself as a sign of congratulations after a tight competition. He was enthusiastic about the new winners. “Yeah I lost, I’m pretty bummed out about it. But my daughter is more happy that Angrboda won than I am sad that I lost. So I’m happy,” he said.
